A Day In the Life of an Oasis-Obsessed Draper...

I've always enjoyed reading little "A Day in the Life" stories about people with their own businesses and as narcissistic as it sounds, I thought I'd let you all have a little glimpse into my "normal" working day!

If all goes to plan and my Rock Clock wakes me up (Google it, it's ACE!), I rise from my pit at 5:15am which gives me enough time to cobble together usually some form of uncoordinated outfit, throw some slap on and wrestle with my contact lenses before I have to head off at 6am to start work in Leeds.  As some of you know, I co-own a second business which has absolutely nothing to do with sewing; more metal and fans than fabric and thread. It's as exciting as it sounds!  Anyway, I try and make sure I'm there around 6:45ish, M62 dependent.  I'm there all day Monday & Tuesday and then on the other days I leave half an hour before the shop is due to open so I can hightail it over to Roberttown.

When I get to the shop, the first thing I do is deal with any deliveries I've had in and sort out any online orders ready for posting.  Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons so I use this time to some work for my other business or I do some work on the shop's website. This is a full time job in itself!  If you've never had a website, you would not believe the amount of work that goes into running one in the background!  Kudos to Brother Joel who developed the website and chooses to do this for a living - rather him than me!

I grab my packed lunch in the shop, after which is usually the time that customers tend to come trickling in. In the afternoons I also look for new products that will hopefully be popular and also work on social media stuff and making adverts and promotional literature as well as all the boring admin and accounts work.  The Hubster also has his own business so I have to do his admin and accounts as well. I have a Marketing degree, so I enjoy doing all the creative stuff more than the run of the mill admin!  If I've got a workshop on that evening, I also make sure everything's set up ready and the workshop space is tidy.

If there isn't a workshop on, I head home about 5:15pm, have a workout (either weight training or boxing), make tea for me and The Hubster and then I get the laptop out and do some more work before heading to bed about midnight.  If there's a workshop on, I don't get home until about 9:30pm, so The Hubster has to fend for himself those nights and I make something quick to eat for myself.  We're not a 1950s household - I do actually enjoy the cooking!! :)

If you're thinking of starting your own business, be warned it takes A LOT of work!  It's really not unusual for me to do 16 hour days during the week and as the shop is open on Saturdays and I spend Sundays either testing sewing patterns, doing samples or more marketing work or accounts, then I don't get much of a weekend either, but it is totally worth it!!  Hopefully it won't be long until I will be able to take on someone to help me, but until that time and as the business is developing, it's just what I have to do to try and make it a success.

I hope you've enjoyed learning a little bit about shop life and remember, next time you're heading to the shop, bring coffee.  Lots of coffee!!!! :)
