Great British Sewing Bee 2021: Episode 1 Musings!

Well, what a lovely bunch of contestants we have this year! Definitely a lot of characters and it's nice to see a few are part of the "Up North Massive"!! 😂

Just so you know, I'm a bit rubbish with names and I never learn them all until about half way through a series, so please bear with me with this!

Despite being mildly infuriated/jealous that Raph only started sewing during the first lockdown and seems to have quickly overtaken my 30 year abilities, he is currently my fave. The mustard Broderie Anglais dress he made in the Made to Measure challenge was the dress of dreams. However I do have one question to ask; am I the only person to have never heard of the term "Buffet Dress"?! Don't get me wrong, I think the name fits the style perfectly. Pre-COVID, you would often catch me lurking around a buffet at a celebration (or indeed a wake!) and any dress which keeps me comfortable enough to over-indulge in beige food once in a while is a winner in my book!

I have to say, I also have a soft spot for Damian. Despite the fact he's from the wrong side of the Pennines, he's a very likeable bloke and after a nightmare in the first two challenges, he pulled it out of the bag in the Made to Measure, didn't he! So much so, that do we know for sure that he didn't nip out to a shop and buy that dress?!! 😉

A special mention has to go to Jean and her pussy placement (if you know, you know!) I do enjoy a bit of smut so this perked me up no end!! 😂😂

I must say though, we don't often have that many "beefers" in the first episode! Don't get me wrong, if I ever went on there, I would just sit at my machine and cry nonstop, but I was surprised to see others doing the same! Let's hope the tears subside for Episode 2 - I can't wait to see what they make next time!

If you've been inspired to give the Buffet Dress a go (restrictions are starting to lift now so the prospect of indulging in a mini sausage roll or twelve is nearing!) then these are our fave patterns:
