Ever fancied having a go at patchwork but have never known where to start? Well then, look no further! This class is for beginners, however it is expected that you will know how to thread up and use a basic sewing machine.

We will introduce you to the tools and equipment used and the fabric terminology required for a selection of patchwork techniques. During the course you will produce a selection of patchwork samplers using a variety of techniques and materials which will help you to determine your preferred patchwork style for future patchwork and quilting projects.

During this course you will learn the following techniques:

Session 1

  • Introduction to patchwork materials and equipment.
  • Fabric terminology and cutting patchwork fabric.
  • Brief introduction to designing patchwork, colours and template shapes.
  • Introduction to traditional patchwork English piecing (hand sewn).
  • Produce "Grandmother's Flower Garden" sampler using Hexagon template.

Session 2

  • Using patchwork materials fabric finishes.
  • Folding and cutting of fabrics.
  • Choosing suitable fabric prints and discovering that in patchwork, size matters!
  • Produce "Folded Star" sampler. (Tacking and machine sewing).

Session 3

  • Creating textures through quilting and patchwork.
  • Introduction to more patchwork and quilting materials.
  • Produce "Pouf Ball" sampler. (Tacking and machine sewing).

Session 4

  • Introduction to machined patchwork techniques.
  • Constructing a "Log cabin" sampler (machine sewing).
  • Recap on samplers and use in future projects.

At the end of the course you will have produced at least four patchwork samplers.

The price of the course includes:

  • Fat quarters (2 patterned and 1 plain)
  • Sewing thread
  • Wadding and calico
  • Cardboard templates
  • Equipment will be available for use in class, however it is recommended that you bring along your own sewing kit containing: fabric cutting scissors, small embroidery style scissors, needles, pins, tacking thread, chalk/marker, pencil and tape measure. These items will be available to purchase in the shop if you're running short.
  • Use of a sewing machine
  • Tea, coffee and cake

We offer free economy delivery to Europe on all orders over £75 and to the rest of the world on orders over £100.

All items sent internationally will be via a tracked Royal Mail or courier service.

Items posted to countries outside of the EU may have customs charges that are the buyer’s responsibility to pay.

Lost Parcels

Royal Mail does not consider a parcel lost unless it has been missing 15 days in the UK, 20 days in Europe or 25 days in the rest of the world. If after this period has ended you have not received your parcel, please contact us at

Returns Policy

Returns Policy

All sales of fabric, gift cards, workshops and special order items are final. If you change your mind on any other item, a full refund will be given if you return it in its original condition and packaging within 10 days of purchase. Returns after this period and within 28 days of purchase will be exchanged for store credit only. This does not affect your statutory rights.

Fabric should be inspected by you for flaws upon receipt and before you pre-wash it. Unfortunately we cannot offer any refunds on fabric that has been pre-washed as the damage could have occurred in the washing machine and/or tumble dryer.

To complete your return, we require a receipt or proof of purchase.

Please do not send your purchase back to the manufacturer.


Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund.
If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within a certain amount of days.

Late or missing refunds

If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again.
Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted.
Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted.

We only replace items if they are defective or damaged.  If you need to exchange it for the same item, send us an email at and send your item to: Fabricate, 146 Huddersfield Road, Mirfield  GB WF14 8AN.


If the item was marked as a gift when purchased and shipped directly to you, you’ll receive a gift credit for the value of your return. Once the returned item is received, a gift certificate will be mailed to you.

If the item wasn’t marked as a gift when purchased, or the gift giver had the order shipped to themselves to give to you later, we will send a refund to the gift giver and he will find out about your return.


Payment in full is required at the time of your booking to secure your place.  Unfortunately we are unable to reserve places without payment.
If you find you can’t come 2 weeks or more before the start of your course then we will do our best to fill your spot, in which case you will receive a refund, less 25% administration charge.  Unfortunately we cannot offer refunds for cancellations with less than 2 weeks’ notice.
We do not offer partial refunds if you find you can’t attend one of the sessions in a course, so please make sure you can attend ALL sessions before committing to the booking.
